In recent years considerable developments have taken place to determine methods of specifying the habit (or plant shape) of woody plants.

Within the NPS Bamboos habit can be described as Several Shoots/Canes or Culms.  A bamboo with several shoots is defined as “a plant with a number of shoots/canes/culms arising from ground level.”  Examples are Fargesia spp., Pleioblastus spp., Sinarundinaria spp.
